© 2010 Jared Towers -9537. Transient (mammal-eating) killer whale mature male T014. Scarred from being tagged in1976 and around 2009. Scarring in the centre of the dorsal fin is the result of recent limpet tagging. Scarring on the front base of the dorsal fin is from being capture and tagged in the 1970s. As stated in "Transients - Mammal-Hunting Killer Whales" (John K.B. Ford and Graeme M. Ellis): "The tags resulted in the distinctive scars seen at the base of their dorsal fins, apparently as a result of the whales' attempts to remove the devices". Nanoose entangled in fishing gear - Nanoose, a humpback whale seen in our area in 1994, was the victim of a serious and long-lasting entanglement. The whale is very thin and is covered in cyamids or whale lice; indications of poor health in humpback whales. Photo credit: Jim Borrowman
