Scarring in the centre of the dorsal fin is the result of recent limpet tagging. Scarring on the front base of the dorsal fin is from being capture and tagged in the 1970s. As stated in "Transients - Mammal-Hunting Killer Whales" (John K.B. Ford and Graeme M. Ellis): "The tags resulted in the distinctive scars seen at the base of their dorsal fins, apparently as a result of the whales' attempts to remove the devices".
