Third species of large hermit seen in close proximity - the Alaskan hermit. I was intrigued by the crab's behaviour. It was rocking back and forth in the shell. Cleaning? Moulting related? Wish I cold have stuck around to see what happened.
Largest hermit crab sponge I have ever seen. Max size is 25 cm. The sponge completely replaces the hermit crabs original shell home sometimes growing so big that it appears to impair the hermit crab's mobility. Believe this is a bluespine hermit. We would normally never touch the life we are fortunate to see but in this case I had my dive buddy very gently pick up the crab in order to get an idea of size.
