P1285465 - Another awe-inspiring spawn; the carnivorous snail species “wrinkled dogwinkles” (Nucella lamellosa most of these around 7 cm) mating and laying eggs. The pointed yellow shapes are egg capsules known as “sea oats” which protect several dozen eggs. The eggs hatch into crawling embryos in the capsule; finish developing into juveniles inside; and then crawl out of the capsule through an opening at the top

© 2012 Jackie Hildering-203614 - How amazingly cool is this?! The snail seeming to hang in midwater is suspended from a mucus strand. It is a wrinkled amphissa (to 3 cm long; Amphissa columbiana). These marine snails are scavengers and are very active, using their long siphon to smell out the dead. A gland near the foot secretes mucus allowing them to climb up and down. It was amazing how quickly s/he was climbing upwards.
© 2012 Jackie Hildering-203603- Most of the remarkable organisms in this photo (the orange and white/yellow bulbous creatures) are highly evolved invertebrates - having a primitive backbone called a notochord. They are orange social tunicates and yellow social ascidians. There is a hermit crab in the middle of the image.
